Discovering the “Prince Henry the Navigator Route”
We suggest the “Prince Henry the Navigator Route” which includes valleys, cliff tops, sand dunes, pristine golden beaches and the Atlantic Ocean. This area is known as the ‘End of the World’ and is the heart of the south east Alentejo coast and Costa Vicentina Nature Reserve.
Leaving from Budens, passing through Raposeira, you arrive at Vila do Bispo. Then a detour to Castelejo beach where you can enjoy panoramic views of the coast. You continue towards Sagres, a village world famous for its geographical and historical location and for the fort that was commissioned by Prince Henry. You head towards Cape Saint Vincent, the most South Westerly point of Europe and known as ‘The end of the World”. Next stop is Carrapateira, a village set amongst rolling hills. As you continue you come across Bordeira, a village surrounded by farmland. Half a kilometre before Aljezur, you turn left towards Arrifana, a village set by an extended sand bank surrounded by cliffs. Returning to the EN120 road, you drive to Aljezur where you pause for a traditional local dish of bean stew and sweet potato. After a visit to the beaches, you return to the main road and drive to Rogil. The choice of gastronomic dishes is endless. You can savour Cataplana, local fish stew, seafood rice and whelk bean stew. At the end of this journey, you will come across a hill that hides the beautiful village of Odeceixe. To get to understand how grapes are transformed to wine, you should visit the Wine Cellar Museum, the ‘Pólo Museológico Adega Museu’. We also recommend the Matriz church and the windmill museum, “Pólo Museológico do Moinho”.
